Shaheed Bhagat Singh

Bhagat Singh was born on 27th September 1907 in Village Banga, Punjab. His father was Kishan Singh. When he was born, his father Kishan Singh and his uncles named Ajit and Swaran Singh were jailed for demonstrations against the British Colonisation Bill implemented in 1906. He was born in the surrounding of freedom fighters and nationalists. His family was the supporter of Ghadar Party. 

The politically aware environment around him incited the feeling of patriotism in the heart of young Bhagat Singh. At a very young age, he started participating in national movements against Britishers. He even started following the Non-cooperation Movement. Bhagat Singh was always vocal about his feelings of nationalism and patriotism. he always followed the wishes of Gandhi.

In his teenage years, he experienced two huge incidents which shaped his strong patriotic outlook. First was the Jallianwala Bagh Massacre in 1919 and the second one was the killing of unarmed Akali protestors at the Nankana Sahib in 1921. Due to some circumstances, Bhagat Singh isolated himself from the Gandhi’s strategy of non-violence and he joined the young revolutionary movement. That was the time when he started his journey as the most prominent advocate of violent insurgency against the British rule.

Bhagat Singh said one day that his marriage will be ‘death’ in slave-India which shows his strong patriotic feeling. He had a vision of Free India and he significantly contributed to the freedom struggle. He wrote for several newspapers about several movements. He kept a 116-day fast which ended on 5th October 1929. He fought in several ways and contributed intensely for the freedom movement.

Bhagat Singh was accused of being involved in the Saunders murder along with Sukhdev and Rajguru. He was sentenced to be hanged till death on 7th October 1930. The trio was hanged in Lahore jail on March 23, 1931. They walked towards the gallows cheerfully while chanting their favorite slogan “Inquilab Zindabad”. Bhagat Singh was recently voted as the Greatest Indian in a poll conducted by India Today.
