The Nigeen Lake is situated to the east of Srinagar city. This lake is a part of Dal lakes and is 8 km away from the Dal Lake. These Lakes are linked with each other through a causeway. It is located at the foot of mountain Zabarwan. From the south side, this lake is surrounded by the Shankaracharya hill and from the west side by the Hari Parbat. This side view adds more beauty to this lake.
The lake got its name Nigeen from the word Nageena. The meaning of the Nageena is a Jewel in the ring. This name is due to the presence of the grassy areas and trees which seems to be fixed in the ring. Mostly, the lake has willow and poplar trees. It is one of the notable lakes in Srinagar. It is also quiet, beautiful, and scenic. It is a perfect place for the tourists for spending their time.
The near spots of the lake are the Lal Bazar and Bagh wanpora. Many visitors visit this lake every year. It has eye-catching scenic natural beauty. Many people also swim in this lake. You can enjoy skiing in the water, motor rides, and sailing. There is also staying options in houseboats and shikara rides. It is a major attraction for the tourists as its water is purer than that of Dal Lake. It is best for swimming. It also has less crowded and deeper as compared to the Dal Lake. The best time to visit this lake is from May to September.
