Meghalaya means ‘the abode of clouds‘ in Sanskrit which is popularly known for its rain as it receives the largest amount of rainfall in the world in Mawsynram and Cherrapunji. It is situated in North-east and is the most beautiful state of India which offers a variety of scenic landscape. It is one amongst the seven sisters of North East.

This place has hills, lakes, caves, waterfalls, etc and a diverse view for sight-seeing is offered at every inch. Some most popular tourist destinations of Meghalaya are Shillong, Tura, Jowai, Nongpoh, etc. Some prominent tourist attractions of this state are Double Decker living root bridge, elephant falls, Nohkalikai waterfall, Krem Mawsmai cave, Umiam lake and the list is long.

The rawness of local culture and the natural beauty of India lies in this place and makes it unique and lively. The state is inhabited by three tribes namely Garo, Khasi, and Jayantia. The society here follows the matrilineal system in which the inheritance goes to the women of the house and the men are married into women’s families and the kids also get the surnames of their mothers.

Some folk dance which is popular here is Lahoo dance, Doregata dance, Pomela dance, etc. Wangala is the most popular festival of this state. People of Meghalaya are known for its weaving skills, iron extracting skills, etc.
The official languages of this state are English, Khasi, and Garo. The Britishers during the colonial period named it as “Scotland of the East.” There are more than 325 variety of Orchids found here and it is also home to a large variety of fruits, vegetables, medicinal plants, and spices.
