Celebrated on 15th August, Indian Independence Day marks a great significance in the life of every Indian. Although the Indian Independence Bill was put forth on July 4, 1947, only on Aug 17, 1947, India got its real freedom from British rulers.
It was Lord Mountbatten who suggested the date 15 Aug for Independence Day, as this was the day when the Japanese army surrendered before him. After the declaration of independence, then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru raised the Indian Flag for the first time above the Lahori Gate in Delhi. Following the tradition, every Independence Day the prime minister of India raises a flag and gives a speech reminding us of the rich Indian history.
Holiday is observed throughout the country with flag-hoisting ceremonies, cultural events, and parades. 71 years after independence India is now the biggest democracy in the world and also a developing nation with Millions of happy Indians.
