The national park is named after the giant glacier Gangotri which melts and supplies volumes of water to the river Ganga. Also, the river Bhagirathi flows through this park and provide nourishment to the numerous species of birds and animals thriving in this region. The park is intact from the ill effects caused by humans as it is located in a remote area.

Furthermore, due to correct balance of frigid and cool temperatures, the Gangotri National Park serves as a home to some rare animals, like Himalayan Monal and snow leopards. The best time to experience the beauty of Gangotri National Park is in the months of October and November because the flora flourishes and the wildlife thrives to the best during this time. Avoid visiting in the monsoons as there is the risk of landslides.
