The land was earlier lived by the Marathas in the 16th century. They construct various ghats on the bank of river Ganga. There are around 88 ghats in the city. The main purpose of the ghat is to do the Aarti of the river Ganga. These ghats have their own importance in the Hindu religion. These ghats are also popular for the different activities for tourists. One of the most popular ghat in Varanasi is the Dashashwamedh Ghat.

The ghat is situated near the temple of Kashi Vishwanath. It is located near the famous tourist’s spot Jantar Mantar. There are many old stories behind the name of this ghat. Some people said that Lord Brahma constructed this ghat for welcoming Lord Shiva at this place. He took 10 of his horses and sacrificed them; therefore, the ghat was named as Dashashwamedh Ghat.

It is also said that this ghat was built by the Baijirao Peshwa in 1740. In 1774, this ghat was built by the Indore queen Ahilya Bhai Holkar.

Most tourists visit this ghat to enjoy the Aarti of River Ganga. Many people take a dip in the River Ganga. It is believed that it helps in a wash off their sins.
