Akhnoor is a very beautiful place, which is located in the State of Jammu and Kashmir. This town is 28 km away from the Jammu. This town is situated on the Himalayas’ foothill. It is located on the bank of River Chenab, which make it more scenic and amazing. The Akhnoor, hour and Chowki choura are the three zones of education and Akhnoor and Khour are the 2 blocks of revenue. This town has seven Tehsils.
There are many historical places in the town for the tourists to visit. Some of the most famous places are Sumah Devta, Jia Pota Ghat, Valley civilization of Akhnoor and Indus, Ambaran, Akhnoor Fort. There are many caves, which has been stayed by the Pandavas during the time of their exile. The Parashuram Temple is located near the town. In this temple, the Parashuram Jayanti is celebrated every year in the month of May.it is celebrated as Akshaya Tritiya. The border is just 18 km from this place. There is also a temple of Mahakali. On every Tuesday, a special pooja is done.
There is also a beautiful and scenic park on the river bank. This place looks more beautiful during the hours of night and evening. You will enjoy the glittering necklace on the bank of river Chenab.
During the time of Agyaatwass, the Pandavas stayed at this place to hide from the Kauravas. Earlier, the place was named as Virat Nagar. There is a small story behind the change in its name. On the way to Kashmir, the Mughal emperor Jahangir has died. His death was kept as a secret as there were speculations for the crown. His dead body was kept in Chingus and to be buried it was transferred to the Lahore. On the way, the body was felt in the Chenab River while crossing it. Noor Jahan shed tears after seeing it. So the place got its name Akhnoor as where the tears of Noor Jahan felt from the eyes (Akh).
It is also said that the fresh air of this place cure the eyes of Jahangir when he was returning. The place was then known as Akhnoor, as he named it as the light of the eyes.
