Ramnagar Fort

The Ramnagar Fort was built in the 18th century. It was located on the bank of River Ganga. It is just opposite to Tulsi Ghat. It is just 2 km away from the Banaras Hindu University. The fort was built by the king of Varanasi, Raja Balwant Singh Kashi Naresh. It is now the home place of the king Anant Narayan.

The fort has a very lovely structure. It has a scenic beauty from all around. The fort has many attractive things to view for the visitors including Museum, the Astronomical clock of bid size, reception room, beautifully designed balconies, courtyards of open style and many other things.

It was also named as Vyas Kashi as it was the tap place for Rishi Vyas. The fort has beautiful and stunning curved shaped balconies. The courtyards and exhibition places are opened. It looks very attractive and beautiful. There is also a temple of Dakshin Mukhi which is dedicated to Lord Hanuman. The fort was built on a higher platform. A small place in the fort is opened for the visitors. The fort has 2 white towers. There is the living area for the king on its one side. The fort is also used for shooting films.

The museum in Ramnagar is also famous as the Saraswati Bhawan also as Vidya Mandir. The hall in the Museum is the mirror image of the court of the old time. The museum has an ancient collection of guns, swords, cars, hookahs, musical instruments, costumes, furniture, coins, jewelry and many other things. There is also a collection of covers that are beautifully designed. The fort has an Astronomical clock that was built in the 19th century. It shows the astronomical details of the planets with the day, month, year and week.

It is just 14 km from the Varanasi railway station. It opens from 10 AM to 5 PM on all days of the week. It closed during the festival of Holi.

The best time to visit this place is in the month of October. The fort looks colorful at this time. It gets crowded due to the celebration of the fair of Ram Lila. This fair was celebrated every year for one month. The place is therefore named as Ramnagar.  The visitors can also visit this fort through river by ferry. The visitors can also enjoy the number of other festivals by visiting this fort in the month of January and February. The fort is free from any ticket. The cost of entrance to the museum is Rs 20 for Indians and it is Rs 150 for Foreigners.
