The Dras war memorial in Kargil was built by the Indian Army to commemorate the soldiers and officers of the Indian Army who were killed in the 1999 Kargil War against Pakistan. It is located in Dras at the foothills of the Tololing Hill. The memorial houses a huge epitaph on which the names of the martyrs of the Kargil War are engraved.
There are many places to see the memorial like the
1. Vijay Path – The central walkway that connects the entrance gate and the memorial building
2. The Amar Jawan or the eternal flame that is never extinguished
3. The Wall of Heroes on which the names of all the martyrs are written
4. The Live Briefing area where the visitors are given a brief about the Kargil War
5. The Veer Bhoomi – The place where the epitaphs of the fallen heroes are displayed
6. The Manoj Pandey Gallery which showcases the various achievements of the Indian Armed Forces
7. The Remembrance Hut – Which displays letters and notes written by the army members during the war
8. The Cafeteria
9. The Audio Visual Room where you can see a documentary about the Kargil War and finally
10. The MiG Aircraft – Bofors Gun display.
The last one, in particular, is very popular with the visitors and you can see scores of them trying to take a photo next to these weapons. The Dras War Memorial is a must visit for every Indian so that they can pay homage to the heroes of the nation.
